Fresh Mochi Art is proud to present "Moga," a group exhibition featuring six distinguished artists of Japanese and Japanese-American ancestry: Patti Warashina, Catherine Cross Uehara, Hanako O’Leary, Michelle Kumata, Sakura Davis, Erin Shigaki and Elizabeth Jameson. The exhibition title, Moga, is a Japanese portmanteau for modan gāru (Modern Girl), a term originally used in the 1920s to describe women who challenged traditional Japanese social norms by embracing Westernized fashion and lifestyle. In this contemporary showcase, these four artists reclaim and expand the term, using ceramics, drawings, and mixed media to explore the intersection of heritage, gender, and the evolving identity of the modern woman.

Hanako is in process of creating her next work, Kamon, a monumental quilt made from thousands of individually made origami Vulvas. Women and those who identify as daughters are invited to join us for this free, intermediate level origami workshop with Hanako Saturday April 25th 11:00-1:00pm Please contact the gallery at elizabeth@ejameson.com to register for the workshop as space is limited.

Opening reception Saturday May 17, 6-9pm. The gallery will also be open on Saturday May 24 from 1-4pm, and Saturday May 31st, 1-4pm, the artists will be in attendance. The Closing Reception will be  Saturday June 7th, 6-9pm.

Burgoyne is known for her small biomorphic color pencil drawings that depict vague suggestions of trees, clouds, fungi, water, science fiction illustrations, and enigmatic musings.In contrast, Jensen’s large scale assemblages are hand hewn soft sculptures, housing rusted industrial scraps, that reveal devilishly teasing stories about staying sane in an unrecognizable world. Together, the artists seem to be saying: let’s escape the madness or have fun trying.

Jennifer McNeely: Sculptor

Artist Statement  

The compulsion to fix and repair feels like a natural response to life. In my life as well

as in the world currently there is an unrelenting pace. It’s MUCH TOO MUCH!

The daily expectations and responsibilities are unreasonable. There isn’t a way

around it. Sometimes the only thing that one can do, is make. So, I’m beading and

stitching in response. This body of work began as a balm against the external chaos

in a deregulated world. As I work, I can change my focus from the never ending “to

do” and create a new thing entirely, the piece!

The technical methods in my work mirrors my internal process: I sew, I mend, I

stretch.  Like a material that has been heated and stressed, I adapt and become

stronger.

My work continues from a long line of sculptors who explore material-based

processes. I continually learn new fiber and construction skills that further my craft.

Jennifer McNeely has exhibited her work in her home of the Pacific Northwest and across the country for over 25 years in both solo and group exhibitions. As a process based artist, she relies on the materials to inform her work. This unique approach and her prolific pace has earned her accolades including: The Artist Trust GAP Grant, Portable Works Program, and inclusion in private collections and publications, including a documentary series on BBC.
